Act 2 Scene 3 Summary

Act 2, Scene 3
Location: Friar Lawrence’s cell.
Characters: Romeo, Friar Lawrence.
Time: Monday morning
Event: Romeo hurries to Friar Lawrence’s cell from having no sleep because he is in a hurry to get married to Juliet. Friar Lawrence talks about how herbs can be very good but can also be deadly, he compares this with men. ” Within the infant rind of this weak flower poison hath residence, and medicine power: for this, being smelt, with that part cheers each part being tasted, stays all senses with the heart. Two such opposed kings encamp them still in man as well as herb, grace and rude will; and where the worker is predominant”. romeo then enters the scene with the line ” Good morrow father” and Friar Lawrence talks about why he is up so early and that it must be because he is sick or that he hasn’t even been to sleep. Romeo says he hadn’t slept and Friar Lawrence through he was with Rosaline. Romeo announces that he has forgotten that name but does not hate anyone and that he has just moved on. Friar Lawrence reminds him about how upset he was at that he had a tear-stained on his cheek. Friar Lawrence also talks about how he likes what he sees but does he really have feelings for her. Friar Lawrence- ” Young men’s love then lies not truly in their hearts, but in their eyes”. He uses this quote to say does he really have feelings for her or is it just what he sees in her, but Romeo seems to have a deep love for Juliet.
